Google’s upcoming operating system OS, Android 16, is expected to be released much sooner than the previous date.
Earlier, Google confirmed that the finalised version of Android 16 will be released between April 2025 and June 2025, meaning the second quarter of the year 2025.
While the tech giant is yet to reveal the exact release date, recent reports revealed the tentative launch date of Android 16.
Android 16 release date (expected)
According to Android Headlines, Android 16 will be moved to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) on June 3. It will come as a successor to Android 15, which debuted in September 2024.
AOSP will provide access to Android 16's source code, allowing developers to develop custom OS variants, and optimise device compatibility, and customisation.
Shortly after the release, it will be made available as an over-the-air (OTA) update for Google Pixel devices, which are the first ones in the market to get the latest Android updates.
Android 16’s major SDK release will include behaviour changes, APIs, and other features.
Google’s decision aims to align the rollout of Android 16 with the launch of new Android devices, ensuring a more rapid update process for eligible devices.
Android 16 features
Android 16 could let third-party developers access Rich Ongoing Notifications. It enables them to add custom text, background colours, and icons to the status bar chips.
Android 16 will also introduce a new “bubble anything” feature that would allow users to use any app in a floating window on smartphones and tablets for an improved multitasking experience.
