Although the tech giant Apple was up to a project to design its Apple Car, a fully autonomous vehicle, Bloomberg reported that the iPhone maker has officially dropped the project in a bid to channalise its resources and workforce to build on the generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technology.

The announcement, released internally, to call off the project came from the Apple COO Jeff Williams and Kevin Lynch, who were in charge of the Apple Car project since 2021.

The Apple Car project — also called Project Titan — was in the works for almost a decade, with over 2,000 employees working on it. However, following the cancellation of the project, some of the Apple Car project's workforce will be deployed for the company's AI team led by John Giannandrea.

Unfortunately, relocation of the posts won't be offered to all the 2,000 employees of the Project Titan, as some of them may “apply for jobs on other Apple teams,” the report says.

It added that there “will be layoffs,” while not reflecting on details about how many employees will be laid off.

The report further stated that “Apple’s most senior executives finalised the decision in recent weeks,” as the project came to a “make-or-break point” inside Apple. Pushing the company to decide on the matter was Tim Cook bearing pressure from stakeholders.
