Apple is reportedly working on an iteration of its tracking device, the AirTag 2, which is likely to be launched in June or July 2025.
The second generation of the smart tracker is expected to boast a new chip, similar to the one found in the iPhone 15, according to a report.
Notably, Apple originally launched the AirTag back in 2021, after two years of anticipation and leaks.
AirTag 2 ultrawide-band chip
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman on Sunday claimed that the anticipated AirTag 2 will feature a new ultrawide-band chip instead of the one used in the original AirTag. This new chip will likely be similar to the one introduced in the iPhone 15 in 2023.
Gurman also noted that the new ultrawide-band chip is expected to boost the Precision Finding range in the AirTag 2, making it easier to track or find lost items.
Currently, an item with an AirTag attached to it can be tracked from 10 to 30 metres away. However, with the new chip, the range is expected to be triple, Gurman claimed.
Moreover, Apple is expected to make privacy-focused changes for the AirTag 2 to avoid any misuse in the future.
