Apple is reportedly working on a new version of its budget-friendly Apple Watch SE, potentially introducing a significant change in its design. According to recent reports, the next-generation Apple Watch SE might feature a plastic design instead of the current aluminium casing.
Currently, the Apple Watch SE is made out of aluminium, similar to the higher-end Apple Watch models. In 2022, Apple updated the Watch SE, redesigning the rear case with a new "nylon composite" material instead of ceramic. The upcoming model may further deviate from its aluminium roots by adopting a rigid plastic shell.
This change, if implemented, could reduce the production costs, allowing Apple to lower the starting price of the Apple Watch SE, which is currently priced at $249. For comparison, Samsung’s most affordable watch starts at $199, suggesting that a price reduction could make the Apple Watch SE more competitive in the market.

The Apple Watch SE boasts a Retina LTPO OLED display with 1000 nits brightness, although it lacks the Always-On functionality found in the Apple Watch Series 9. It includes a Haptic Digital Crown for navigating the operating system, with Ion-X glass protecting the display.
The watch also features the same speaker and microphone as the previous generation SE, optimised for phone calls, Siri, and Walkie-Talkie.
While the report does not provide additional information, the potential shift to a plastic design highlights Apple's efforts to offer a more affordable option in its smartwatch lineup without compromising on essential features.
As Apple continues to innovate, the next-generation Apple Watch SE could attract a broader audience, particularly those seeking a cost-effective yet functional smartwatch.
