Apple iOS 18 will add a bunch of artificial intelligence (AI) features to iPhones, powered by a massive language model.
Citing sources, Indian Express reported that the initial set of AI features for iPhones will function on the device rather than in the cloud. The Cupertino-based tech giant will release iOS 18 on June 10 at Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, which is expected to be the largest software update since the original iOS.
A report by Bloomberg mentioned: ”As the world awaits Apple’s big AI unveiling on June 10, it looks like the initial wave of features will work entirely on the device. That means there’s no cloud processing component to the company’s large language model, the software that powers the new capabilities.”
The company would support some AI capabilities through cloud computing, which might include third-party language models such as Google's Gemini, OpenAI's GPT, or Baidu's AI, relying on the market demand.
Apple is expected to be in negotiations with the above-mentioned brands about integrating various AI models inside the iPhone.
Moreover, iOS 18 might not have a ChatGPT or Copilot-like chatbot. However, the company might incorporate generative AI capabilities into some of its existing first-party products to improve efficiency and usefulness.
Whereas, apps and services like Siri, the Notes app, the Spotlight search engine, the Safari web browser, the Apple Music app, and other first-party services are expected to benefit from generative AI capabilities. It’s yet unclear whether new AI functions would be available to all iPhones eligible for iOS 18.
