September is the most promising month of the year; something new is happening in the skies every other week this month, starting from planetary alignments to a supermoon eclipse, and a global moon observation night.
Gadinsider has brought you a list of astronomical events of September 2024, which includes:
September 6-7: Spot Mercury in morning twilight
Start the month off by trying to spot Mercury, which will be visible low in the east just before dawn. This is an excellent opportunity for Northern Hemisphere viewers to try and catch sight of this elusive planet.
September 14: International observe Moon night
Join moon watchers in their thousands across the globe for an evening of observing the Moon. Whilst events will be taking place across the world you can join either in person or online.
Because of this year's dates of September, this event provides a particularly rare opportunity to see the Marius Hills, volcanic domes and cones on the lunar surface.
September 16: Moon and Saturn alignment
A celestial event of September would let you see the moon carry Saturn across the sky, which can be seen in the south-eastern sky after sunset. If you live on the West Coast, the moon will start to occult Saturn the following morning.
September 17: Supermoon eclipse
Witness the full moon that will be slightly larger and a bit brighter than normal. The supermoon will also undergo a partial lunar eclipse, which will be visible in the evening hours for U.S. observers.
September 22: Moon passes through Pleiades
On September 22, witness the moon glide through the Pleiades star cluster, a rare and beautiful sight. This event is visible to U.S. observers.
September 23: Jupiter and Moon alignment
Watch as Jupiter and the moon rise late in the evening and climb high into the southeast as dawn approaches on September 23.
September 25: Crescent Moon and Mars
In another astronomical event of September 2024, catch the crescent moon appearing near Mars, accompanied by Jupiter and the bright stars of the winter constellations in the predawn sky.
