There's no harm in saying that passwords have become outdated since the introduction of two-factor authentication and extra secure systems like facial recognition.

One probable and most likely reason is that nowadays every other internet user is bound to remember various passwords for various apps and sites.

In this situation, almost all platforms, including iOS and Android, are not naive to password manager apps that eliminate the need to remember multiple passwords and enter them frequently.

Automatic passkey coming to iOS 18's Passwords app

The pinnacle of this facility for iPhones is found within the Passwords app on iOS but as the iOS 18 is about to be released, the experience seems to get so enhancing that the app itself might vanish.

Just like any other technological evolution, passwords are evolving, too, and the future of passwords is passkeys.

Although they serve as an alternative to passwords, only a handful of apps and websites currently offer them, since they're new, scarce and under-developed.

Passkeys don't require users to set a username and password to create an account, rather they rely on utilising face IDs and biometrics.

As passkeys are said to be coming to iPhone's Passwords app with the rollout of the iOS 18, they will rely on Apple device's Face ID or Touch ID to create an account.

The functionality which brings the iOS 18's Passwords app to the brink of extinction is that it will automatically upgrade the login credentials of an app or website into a passkey, meaning that password saving in bulk, which we all mostly do nowadays, would be replaced by passkey.

iOS 18 beta 4 release

As the iOS 18 beta 4's release nears, updates to iOS 17 will be minimal. Meanwhile, iOS 18 will be released later this fall, introducing a bunch of new features: allowing apps to be freely located on the home screen, dark or tinted app icons and Apple Intelligence for compatible devices.
