Overwatch 2, a popular team-based multiplayer shooter, has captivated players with its fast-paced action and unique characters. The game shifted from the original Overwatch’s 6v6 gameplay to 5v5, creating a fresh experience.

However, Blizzard seems to be revisiting its roots with 6v6 playtesting, sparking excitement among fans.

Overwatch 2, by reintroducing 6v6 gameplay, aims to provide long-time fans with nostalgia while offering new players more variety.

Blizzard began testing 6v6 matches in December 2023, aiming to explore how this format fits into Overwatch 2’s update structure. Initially scheduled to end on January 7, the playtest was extended due to overwhelming popularity.

This mode brought back a role queue system, with teams composed of two players each in Damage, Support, and Tank roles.

This renewed focus on 6v6 gameplay isn’t entirely surprising. Nostalgia for the original Overwatch remains strong, especially after the success of the Overwatch Classic event held in late 2024. During this event, players experienced the game as it was at launch, with 21 original heroes and their classic abilities.

Interestingly, Blizzard is expected to make 6v6 gameplay a permanent feature. While no official announcement has been made, extended playtests and fan feedback suggest this classic mode could soon return.
