Bungie, the renowned developer of Destiny 2, is gearing up to launch a new product called Marathon. The new Player versus player (PvP) extraction shooter received the most interest since its announcement in May 2023.
Recently, there was some news specifying the fact that Marathon would hit the market at a $40 release price, not with a free-to-play model that many modern games prefer.
Bungie's Marathon gameplay and features
Marathon is described as a PvP extraction shooter with an interesting twist. Unlike the hero shooters that compete with Valorant and Overwatch, in Marathon heroes are classes with unique abilities.
Gameplay is compared with Escape from Tarkov with only two maps confirmed up to now. Bungie has been playtesting and collecting feedback from internal teams, streamers, and content creators.

Some rumours suggest that Bungie and Sony were negotiating the pricing policy for Marathon, considering the poor performance of the live-service title Concord by Sony.
However, it seems that while Bungie has decided to go with the pay-to-play premium model and is abandoning free-to-play, as in Destiny 2
Bungie's Marathon controversy and concerns
Controversy surrounds the course of the Marathon's decision since it's a game that bears too much resemblance to the generic hero shooters. Subgrunt goes that morale is quite low at Bungie these days due to changes in the organisation and as Destiny 2's future.
Marathon game playtest feedback has been mostly good, but a few players feel that the game is not even worth the price of $40.
A new Marathon trailer, currently in production, may be officially released soon and may have more details about the game. The success of Marathon will make or break Bungie and Destiny for some time to come.
