Get ready for a breathtaking celestial event as four planets align in the early morning sky over the Philippines on Thursday, April 4. According to the state weather bureau PAGASA, Venus, Saturn, Neptune, and Mars will be visible, with Venus, Saturn, and Mars easily seen with the naked eye. However, observing Neptune will require a modest telescope or high-powered binoculars.

A rare planetary alignment occurs when multiple planets align themselves close to one side of the sun at the same time. Even though Neptune's observation requires specialised astronomical equipment, the alignment offers a breathtaking celestial display that can be seen without it.

When can I watch Lyrid Meteor Shower?

In addition to the planetary alignment, skywatchers in the Philippines can also anticipate two meteor showers in April. Comet C/1861 G1 (Thatcher), the source of the Lyrid Meteor Shower, will illuminate the night sky from April 14 to April 30, with a peak on April 22.

When is Puppids Meteor Shower?

The Pi Puppids meteor shower, on the other hand, is predicted to peak on April 23 and be visible from April 15 to April 28.

For optimal viewing of both meteor showers, observers are advised to choose a dark observing spot away from city lights and under clear, moonless skies. While specialised equipment such as binoculars or telescopes is not required, a dark, unobstructed view of the sky enhances the viewing experience.

Mark your calendars and don't miss out on this rare celestial spectacle happening above the Philippine skies on April 4.
