Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced the launch of free Wi-Fi services in all major parks and recreational locations across the city. This progressive initiative aims to provide citizens with uninterrupted internet access, enabling them to stay connected, particularly in popular outdoor areas.
Wahab inaugurated the free Wi-Fi service at Frere Hall, where he noted that the facility would be extended to several prominent parks, including Bagh Ibn-e-Qasim, Kidney Hill Park, Hill Park, Safari Park, Lake Park, and others under the administration of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).
Speaking at the launch, Wahab stated: “Karachi has now joined the ranks of cities offering such services to its residents. With the increasing use of smartphones, the availability of Wi-Fi at recreational spots has become a necessity.”
He further emphasised the importance of providing such facilities in public areas, drawing a comparison with elite clubs like the Gymkhana. "If such facilities are available to the upper classes, why can’t similar offerings be extended to the lower and middle classes?" Wahab questioned, stressing the need for IT centres, restaurants, and entertainment facilities in major parks to ensure all citizens can fully enjoy their leisure time.
The free Wi-Fi service at Frere Hall, which can accommodate nearly 2,000 users, will be available 24/7, ensuring that visitors can access the internet and social media seamlessly.
Alongside the Wi-Fi initiative, Wahab announced several groundbreaking projects aimed at enhancing the cultural experience at Frere Hall. The library section of this historic building has been upgraded to provide a more welcoming environment and is set to offer music classes in the near future, further enriching its educational offerings.
In addition, Wahab unveiled plans to organise traditional music performances at Frere Hall to promote the city’s cultural heritage. These performances are expected to enhance the cultural vibrancy of the space, providing both residents and tourists with a unique and memorable experience.
