The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Wednesday revealed that millions of daily attempts are made by citizens to access restricted websites, often through unregistered virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass government restrictions.

Geo News, citing sources withing PTA, reported that nearly two million daily attempts focus primarily on adult content, despite the PTA’s extensive restrictions. The authority has already blocked more than 844,000 explicit websites and over 100,000 blasphemous URLs.

In recent months, the PTA has intensified its crackdown by blocking unregistered VPNs, citing them as a security risk.

This move has led to a surge in complaints about reduced VPN speeds. In response, the PTA plans to streamline the VPN registration process to promote compliance. The authority warns that unregistered VPNs not only facilitate access to illicit content but also pose potential threats to national security, warranting closer scrutiny and enforcement.
