If you're experiencing issues with the Google Search app on your Android device, you're not alone. It seems a common bug has been plaguing the Android version of the Google Search app, causing it to continuously crash and thus preventing many users from searching.

According to reports, trouble started on Saturday (September 14) evening over the weekend and affects numerous users.

What's happening?

The screen of the Google app flashes on the screen for a brief instant before sending the user right back to their homescreen. Not even the Google Search bar widget works. It's only possible to search the device itself via the search bar on the Pixel Launcher. Voice Search and Google Discover have also suffered.

While there's no obvious fix yet, you can still use google.com through Chrome or other mobile browsers. You can also try using the Gemini app as an alternative. Unfortunately, uninstalling updates or using older versions of the Google app won't resolve the issue.

Google's response

Google has acknowledged the issue, stating that they're working to identify the root cause of the problem. They've promised to provide an update within 12 hours.

The issue is only on the Android app of Google, so other platforms like iOS and desktop devices were not affected. Google Assistant, Gemini, Google Lens, and Circle to Search continue to function properly.
