On Wednesday, Google announced a strategic move to enhance its competitive edge against Microsoft-backed OpenAI by incorporating its "Gemini" AI models into select business tools at a more affordable price point.

Last August, Alphabet's unit introduced "Duet AI in Workspace," a suite of AI assistants designed to streamline tasks such as writing in Google Docs, composing emails in Gmail, and generating custom visuals in Google Slides.

Initially priced at $30 per user per month for corporate clients, this offering is now rebranded as "Gemini for Google Workspace." The revamped service will be available at tiered pricing levels of $20 and $30 per user per month, depending on the included features, in addition to the standard Google Workspace subscription.

In comparison, OpenAI provides a suite featuring its AI model GPT-4 and the image generation tool DALL·E, offered to individuals at $20 per user per month and starting at $25 per user per month for businesses.

With both companies vying to capitalise on generative AI technology, which is highly sought after for its task automation and human-like responses, the competition is intensifying, fueled by substantial investments and growing customer interest.

While Microsoft, leveraging its partnership with OpenAI, has swiftly integrated genAI capabilities into its suite of enterprise productivity software and cloud services, Google is making strides to democratise access to Gemini. Individual users can now leverage Gemini's capabilities within their personal Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Meet apps through a subscription to Google One AI Premium, an offering that provides additional storage and features across Gmail, Drive, and Photos.

Furthermore, Google Workspace users will benefit from a standalone chat experience called "Chat with Gemini," with the assurance that conversations within this tool will not be utilised for advertising purposes. This move underscores Google's commitment to expanding the accessibility and utility of its AI technologies across both individual and business users.
