YouTube is reportedly extending the time limit of its Shorts feature, allowing creators to post videos of up to three minutes.
Currently, YouTube’s short video format supports up to 60 seconds or shorter videos, competing with TikTok and Instagram reels.
YouTube Shorts now getting longer
According to Google, increasing the time limit of YouTube Shorts was the top requested feature by creators and applies only to videos that are square or taller in aspect ratio.

This new update within the Shorts feature will be effective from October 15. However, the company mentioned that it won’t affect any videos that have been uploaded before the mentioned date.
To be noted, TikTok has also gradually increased the video limit over the years and now allows videos up to 10 minutes in length.
Other updates coming to YouTube Shorts
YouTube also announced a new template feature that allows creators to use the template of other Shorts they like.
Once rolled out, it will let users match their clips to trending sounds taken from other videos, a feature similar to the one available in TikTok where users can pick from preset video styles and make changes as per preferences.
Additionally, the video streaming platform is also adding a “show fewer Shorts” option on the app that will result in fewer Shorts videos in a user’s home feed. Users can choose this by tapping on the three dots in the upper right of any Shorts grid on the Home feed.
