Google Maps on Thursday announced a new update powered by Google Gemini that will help users find new places to visit and answer questions about different locations using artificial intelligence (AI).

This development is part of Google’s efforts to ensure its navigation app stays competitive with Apple Maps and other navigation startups.

AI integration in Google Maps

Google Maps head Miriam Daniel showcased the platform's AI-powered question-answering capabilities. When asked, "Is it a quiet atmosphere?" about a selected restaurant, Google Maps responded, "It has a lively atmosphere and a cosy feel."

The response was backed by relevant reviews, providing transparency.

The feature will also allow users to get ideas for things to do. For instance, if a friend is visiting you, ask Google Maps for “things to do with friends at night.” Gemini will come with a curated list of options.

This generative AI feature will roll out to Android and iOS users in the US later this week. However, Google is also planning to introduce a similar feature to Search, including AI-powered review summaries and the capability to ask questions about places.

Additionally, Google Maps is adding enhanced navigation features to help users get to their destinations.
