Google Messages, a popular messaging app for Android smartphones, is checking a new design for read receipts in RCS (Rich Communication Services) conversations. Currently, read receipts display underneath a message between the time/date and the RCS encryption lock.

Gadinsider has got you four states, with these icons changing the previous word-based way.

  • Timer: Your message is being sent.
  • Single check: Your message has been sent.
  • Double-check: Your message has been delivered.
  • Colour-filled double-check: Your message has been read.

Alphabet-owned Google is testing a redesign that places the checkmarks inside the message bubble. They are displayed at the right and are featured in a circle that is slightly lighter than the background.

Google’s redesign lets read receipts display on all earlier messages instead of just the newer ones. This aspect makes the read status explicitly but it is unnecessary in the grand scheme.
