Google integrated Gemini access into Google Messages in May 2024, introducing a floating action button (FAB) that allowed users to quickly start a conversation with the chatbot by simply tapping it.

However, Google has now introduced an option for users to disable this Gemini button in the messaging app. An APK teardown of the Google Messages app first revealed this feature in July 2024, indicating that users would soon be able to turn off the floating action button (FAB) for Gemini within Messages.

The FAB initially appeared above the rectangular “Start chat” button, enabling users to swiftly access Gemini conversations.

To hide Gemini button in Google Messages:

  1. Go to Google Messages Settings
  2. Click on the "Gemini in Messages" option
  3. Disable the “Show Gemini button” toggle

This update is likely to be well-received by users who appreciate having Gemini integrated throughout their system but prefer a less cluttered experience in the Messages app.

The new Gemini setting is currently available in the beta channel, though it has not yet been released to the public.

Previously, Google Messages introduced a redesign for RCS photos with text captions, where images now appear first, and the text is joined to them with the bottom corners of the text bubble curved to match the top of the photo.
