Google Messages update: Magic Rewrite gets revamped with bigger text field

Google Messages for Android has introduced a subtle yet slight change to its Magic Compose feature. The "Rewrite" aspect, which lets users rephrase messages in different styles of writing, is moved from the top right of the text field to the "plus" menu. At the same time, the company makes the text field slightly larger, so composing messages is a bit easier.

What is Magic Compose feature in Google Messages?

Magic Compose is another useful feature in Google Messages, relying on artificial intelligence to create replies and even rewrite messages. The two major sub-components that comprise it are reply generation.

It is based on the context used for up to 20 previous messages that will suggest responses, and a message rewriting feature where users can opt for styles such as Remix, Shakespeare, Chill, Lyrical, Excited, and Formal.

What’s new in Google Messages?

The "Rewrite" feature is moved from the compose bar to the "plus" menu, which also accommodates Gallery, GIFs, Stickers, Files, Location, Contacts, Schedule Send, and Selfie GIF. The change goes along with a slightly larger text field for more space to type. It is pretty convenient for users to have Magic Rewrite and an easier composition process.

Accessibility and availability of Magic Compose feature

To use Magic Compose, your phone has to support Gemini Nano; otherwise, it's cloud-based and requires a Google One membership. This update is now rolling out to some devices through the latest Google Messages beta (version 20240916_01_RC00). However, it's far from reaching the masses at the moment.

This update shows that Google is very much keen on fine-tuning its messaging app. One way it does this is by moving Magic Rewrite to give users access to even more features without cluttering the compose bar.
