The wait for Google's next mid-range champion, the Pixel 8a, might be shorter than expected. A new leak suggests Google could launch and open pre-orders for the Pixel 8a ahead of its traditional Google I/O developer conference, typically held in May.

Citing tipster Billbil-kun of Dealabs, Phone Arena reported that Google might break from tradition by opening pre-orders for the Pixel 8a a week before its official unveiling at Google I/O 2024. This surprise launch strategy could see the Pixel 8a available for pre-order as early as May 7, with a potential full launch date coinciding with Google I/O on May 14.

While details remain officially under wraps, rumours suggest the Pixel 8a will retain the familiar design of its predecessor, the Pixel 7a. The focus is expected to be on camera excellence, a hallmark of the Pixel series. Google's latest Tensor processor is also tipped to power the device, ensuring smooth performance.

Earlier leaks hinted at a starting price similar to the Pixel 7a, which was £499 in the UK. This competitive price point, coupled with a potential early launch, could position the Pixel 8a as a strong contender in the mid-range smartphone market.

With Google yet to make an official announcement, these details remain speculative. However, the leak has sparked excitement amongst fans of the Pixel series who are eager to learn more about the Pixel 8a's features, official launch date, and confirmed price tag.
