Recording phone calls on Android phones has never been easier before. However, with the Pixel 9 series, Google has finally introduced a “Call Notes” feature with the ability to record, transcribe, and summarise phone calls. The feature has been rolled out in the US.

Previously, Android users had to use different third-party apps available on the Google Play Store to record their calls and keep track of important information.

With the new “Call Notes” feature, users can now record, transcribe, and summarise calls using the Gemini Nano, an on-device AI model with multimodality which supports audio, speech, and image inputs in addition to text.

How to use 'Call Notes' to record phone calls

  1. Open the Phone by Google app.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu button.
  3. Now, tap “Settings”
  4. Click the “Call Notes” button and toggle it.
  5. When the feature is activated, it can be easily enabled from the menu during a phone call.
  6. The app plays an audio message on the call informing participants that their calls are being recorded. A “red dot” appears next to the call duration to indicate that the call is being recorded.

Once the phone call is finished, you can access the recording, transcript, and summary by going to the "Recents" tab in the Phone by Google app.

It appears that the“Call Notes” feature isn’t the first that Google offers, as there is a call recording feature already available in the dialer app on Pixel phones, called “Phone by Google” that is blocked by the tech giant on Pixel devices in the United States.

However, this “Call Notes” feature is only accessible to users having Pixel 9 devices while it won’t be available on older phones.
