Under the latest Pixel Drop umbrella released in October, Google has introduced a new underwater camera mode for its latest flagship Pixel 9 series.

By making use of software optimisations, the feature gives a crispy touch to photos and videos captured underwater.

The feature builds upon the underwater visual enhancements of camera-taken images or videos, something which Google has been offering since the Pixel 7 series.

The outstanding property of the recent Pixel Drop is that it allows the underwater mode to work on the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold with any underwater case, meaning underwater enhancements won't be bound to cases curated by Google.

This remarkable capability of the feature also widens its accessibility, since it has eradicated the need to have an expensive diver-quality case to get those optimisations.

The takeaway of the good news is that now Pixel users don't have to have a specific case to use it properly, since their Pixel phones won’t be able to determine if they are willing to use the underwater mode automatically.

It should be noted that enabling the feature will remain applicable unless you turn it off, but fortunately, Google keeps a permanent alert onscreen in the viewfinder to remind you the feature is on, ensuring you don’t forget to turn it off when your underwater experience is over.
