Alphabet-owned Google reportedly began the testing of Wear OS 5.1 for its upcoming operating system (OS) for Android-based wearables. Test builds of the OS have appeared for Pixel Watch 2 which hinted towards the latest and unique version of Android.
Previously, Google commenced its Wear OS 5 platform at I/O 2024 event back in May, highlighting a few significant features including improvements to the Watch Face Format and grid-based app launcher.
Google's Wear OS 5.1 test builds
According to Android Authority, Wear OS 5.1, perhaps dependent on Android 15, the forthcoming OS for Android devices would break the monopoly of several years where Wear OS is based on the predecessor’s Android device such as the Wear OS 3, which was unveiled in 2023 was based on 2022’s Android 13.
A similar pattern was also seen with the Android 14-based Wear OS 5 which was launched with Galaxy Watch 7 back in July as One user interface (UI) 6 Watch. If this rumour turns out to be true, then it would be the first time in two years that Google has launched an interim point update.

Test builds of Wear OS 5.1 were allegedly initiated with 'AP4A.' Moreover, Google confirmed that all the watch faces that are developed for watches without the Watch Face Format (WFF) will not support Google Play Store.
However, there is no further information available regarding Wear OS 5.1 and these rumours are also yet to be confirmed by the company ahead of launch.
