Google TV recently rebranded its “Freeplay” feature and has started to roll out as a new home for its free, ad-supported TV channels in the United States.

Google TV’s free TV channel lineup has been growing since its launch in 2023. Earlier this month, Google added a few more new channels to Google TV devices which as a result had increased from 80 channels to 150 total channels to choose from.

Initially, the rebranding was spotted on the Google TV streamer and is now being expanded to a broader range of Google TV devices, including Chromecasts and Android TVs from brands such as Hisense and TCL.

Google TV’s latest rebranding

Currently, this branding is present under the “Live” tab > Free built-in channels > Google TV Freeplay on the Google TV home screen.

While the search giant is using this new “Freeplay” branding on the main home screen, functionally, this branding doesn’t change anything but would open the doors to Google TV potentially adding other free content in future.

These free channels are available in the US; however, it is not confirmed when Google will expand it to other regions.

Google TV’s Freeplay rebranding appears to be a part of Google’s intention to further invest in its free content ecosystem making users move away from traditional cable packages and towards streaming.
