Google Wallet adds California to List of states supporting digital driver's licenses. This update allows California residents to securely store their driver's license or state ID in Google Wallet, making it easily accessible for age verification, travel, and more.

Google rolled out Digital ID support back in December 2022 and is currently available in four states including Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland where one could store student IDs digitally for passing through some (Transportation Security Administration)TSA checkpoints.

However, now in California Google Wallet users can store their state-issued IDs digitally including their driver’s licenses. Previously, they had access to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Wallet application without integration.

Here’s how to set up Driver’s license in Google Wallet

The set-up process involves switching to digital IDS which is quite simple, here's a step-by-step guide.

  1. Users must have an Android device that supports OS version 8.0 or newer, a screen lock enabled along with Bluetooth, and Nearby device permissions for the Wallet.
  2. However, user’s IDs won’t sync with their Google accounts and will remain on the device where they were added originally.
  3. The verification process also requires users to send a selfie video that is forwarded to the DMV for verification. Once the process is completed, they will receive a confirmation email.
  4. The ID is shared via Bluetooth, and the user is needed to authenticate requests using the device lock.

It appears that Google has been expanding the scope of its Wallet in the US, rivalling Samsung Wallet, which is its only competitor.
