Different US states have created their personalised apps for digital driver’s licenses and ID cards, and California is one of those states. Google Wallet is set to add California ID cards on Android devices.
The California DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) is checking support for Android users. You will not be required to install the California DMV Wallet app. Moreover, you can maintain both. However, the setup process is done within Google Wallet.
Gadinsider has the steps for adding ID card support on Android.
- Open the Wallet App and click the 'Add to Wallet' Button.
- Select “ID Card” from the list.
- Follow the instructions to completion to add your mDL to Wallet.

Latterly, they will be displayed in the app. You can utilise it at ‘select TSA terminals at SFO (San Francisco International Airport), SJC (San Jose, California), LAX (Los Angeles International Airport).’ With this, you’re still supposed to ‘carry your physical DL/ID.’
Currently, California ID cards in Google Wallet for Android are being beta tested with state DMV employees and are not yet live for the public.
