Understand ChatGPT's role: ChatGPT is a tool to help you, not change your input. It's essential to understand that artificial intelligence (AI) will guide you to generate ideas and refine language, but the content should eventually come from your experiences and skills.
Prepare your information: If you have an existing resume, check it and note areas for changes to be made. If you're beginning fresh or a student, list your experiences, skills, and achievements. Include part-time jobs, internships, volunteer work, and academic projects.
Log into ChatGPT: Go to the ChatGPT website. If you're new to ChatGPT click Sign up and follow the on-screen instructions. If you're a returning user, click Log in.
Begin your prompt: Initially, click the paper clip in the prompt box and click Upload from the computer. Once you've attached your resume, type a simple prompt such as “I need help improving my resume.”

For those writing a resume for the first time, provide ChatGPT with your experience in the prompt box.
Enhance your professional summary: Ask ChatGPT to help craft a concise professional summary. For example: 'How can I improve this existing summary for my Editor role?', or 'Can you help me write a 2-3 sentence professional summary for a marketing graduate?' Then hit enter.
Develop your work experience section: Next, work through your job history, or for beginners, your relevant experiences.
Tailor to job descriptions: If you have a specific job in mind, ask ChatGPT to help tailor your resume. For example, you could ask 'Here's the job description for a Senior Editor position.
Highlight your skills: Request ChatGPT's assistance in listing and describing your skills
Put it all together: Now it's time to bring everything together. You could use a prompt like: “Can you take all the information we've generated for my Editor resume and compile it into a cohesive document?”
Give the prompt to ChatGPT for proofreading of the resume and indicate the changes.
