To ensure a seamless transition while making necessary changes to an iPhone or iPad, for instance installing beta software or a major new version of Apple's operating system, it is hard to create an archived backup. Without this precautionary measure, reverting to the device's previous state becomes impossible if something goes wrong.

By generating an archived backup, the user ensures a complete copy of the existing operating system, along with all personalised settings and data. This backup serves as a choice to restore the device in case of any unexpected problems. Below are the steps given on how to make an archived backup:

Steps to generate archived backup of iPhone or iPad

  1. Connect an iPhone or iPad to a Mac using the provided cable.
  2. Click "Allow" in the prompted dialogue to enable the connection.
  3. Selecting the Finder icon from the Dock opens a Finder window.
  4. In the sidebar, tap on the iOS device's name.
  5. Click "Trust" in the Finder window, if it is a user’s first time connecting the device to Mac.
  6. On the device, click "Trust" when prompted and enter the passcode to confirm.
  7. Choose the checkbox next to "Back up all of the data on your [iPhone/iPad] to this Mac” in the General tab.
  8. Enable the checkbox next to "Encrypt local backup" and set a password to protect the data if a user wishes to encrypt the backup.
  9. A user should click "Back Up Now” if they are not interested in generating an encrypted backup.

Once the backup process is finished, users can effortlessly locate the date and time of the most recent backup in the General tab. It is important to note that this archived backup won't be overwritten when a user manually or automatically backups an iPhone or iPad. Nevertheless, users can restore this backup whenever needed by selecting the "Restore Backup..." option available within the same Finder screen.
