Apple’s Messages app is one of the most versatile tools for text-based conversations on iPhone and iPad, allowing users to share files, attachments, photos, links, and more.

While users can access shared files directly within a message thread, Apple also provides an efficient way to manage and delete them to free up storage space without switching between conversations.

Additionally, all shared files within a conversation are grouped in one place for easy access, making it simple to delete them when needed.

Steps to delete attachments in the Messages app

Gadinsider has compiled a step-by-step guide to delete attachments in the Messages app:

  1. Launch the Messages app on your device and open a conversation.
  2. Tap the contact bubble at the top of the display to find conversation details.
  3. Swipe down to the Attachments section, where all shared media, such as photos and documents, are displayed.
  4. To view all files, tap See All under the relevant category.
  5. Select the files you wish to delete by tapping on Select at the top-right corner, then choose the desired attachments.
  6. Once selected, tap Delete and confirm by clicking Delete [number of files] Attachments.
  7. If you're looking to free up significant storage space, repeat these steps for other chat threads.

Optimise your device storage

Regularly managing shared files in the Messages app can help ensure your device remains clutter-free and offers you user-friendly experience. For users frequently exchanging high-resolution media, leveraging iCloud storage for automatic backups is another way to optimise space.
