Instagram is constantly updating its features with new advancements to enhance user experience and therefore, it is testing a significant change to user profiles. The meta-owned platform is exploring a vertical grid layout for profiles instead of the traditional squares.

On Friday, Instagram’s CEO Adam Mosseri revealed that the platform is testing a new upgrade bidding farewell to the classic square photo grid that has been a hallmark since the beginning.

Mosseri also disclosed that the vast majority of photos and videos uploaded to Instagram are vertical which is either four by three in a photo or nine by sixteen in a video.

With the new upgrade, users will be able to upload vertical grid photos meaning now rectangle pictures can also be posted along square.

The new upgrade might also offer some benefits such as it would allow users to post their content in its original format without the need for cropping that used to result in compromising the quality of the uploaded image or video.

Mosseri acknowledged that the upgrade might be disappointing for some users, especially those used to curating their profile grids.

It appears that the new vertical grid feature is still in the testing phase with a small number of people and the platform will be considering the feedback from the community before rolling the feature out to the public.
