Instagram is used worldwide by millions of users. The app keeps on updating its features to facilitate its users and therefore, it is now testing a new feature similar to Snap Map.

Instagram map feature will allow users to post text, photo, and video updates to the map based on the location where they were originally taken. Users can share their map locations with their friends and followers, enabling them to see each others’ activities.

The feature seems quite similar to the renowned Snap Maps released back in 2017 by Snapchat which allowed users to see the location of their friends on a map.

However, a noteworthy difference was seen in the Instagram map feature is that it might have more limited privacy settings, allowing users to choose a “specific group of people” or “Close Friends or only followers they follow back” to share their location with. Whereas, Snap Maps posts are public.

Previously, in 2012, Instagram had an entirely private photo feature which allowed users to put their images on a map but it couldn’t be shared with friends. Due to limited options, the feature couldn’t grab the audience's attention and was shut down four years later.

When is Snap Map coming to Instagram?

The maps feature was first spotted back in February and named as “Friend Map.” However, this week, some images of the feature appeared to the public but it is still unknown where the feature is being tested now and when will it be rolled out to the public.
