The Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (Wispap) has urged the Ministry of Interior to extend the deadline for virtual private network (VPN) registration — which was initially set for November 30.
Wispap Chairperson Shahzad Arshad suggested extending the deadline to provide more time for educating users about the importance of registering VPN services and the associated procedures. To simplify the registration process, Wispap has collaborated with the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) to build trust among users, especially those hesitant to comply with the regulations.
Wispap highlighted the security risks posed by unregistered VPNs, which can redirect unsuspecting users to malicious servers, jeopardising their private data. The association acknowledged the government's concern over this issue and supported the stance that registration is crucial to protect citizens from such threats.
The association noted that the government's updated framework has significantly eased the registration process, benefiting freelancers and small businesses. The association pointed out that these improvements have reduced hesitancy among users about sharing sensitive information.
Wispap emphasised that encouraging users to register VPNs through legitimate and secure methods aligns with the goal of creating a safer digital environment. This approach also fosters trust between users and authorities, enhancing cooperation in ensuring cybersecurity.
Reiterating its commitment to collaboration, Wispap expressed willingness to work with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the interior ministry to address any issues related to the registration process. The association remains open to dialogue and assistance on this matter.
