Apple announced the long-awaited Apple Intelligence iOS 18 at the “It’s Glowtime” event on September 9 at Apple Park in Cupertino. iOS 18 is said to bring a host of new features with several of them being powered by Apple Intelligence.
The upcoming iPhone update, first announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 in June, also unfolds new home screen customisation options, along with other quality-of-life advancements.
In a subsequent announcement after the iPhone 16 launch, Apple confirmed the release date and the compatible device to receive the iOS 18 update.
iOS 18 update release date
The Cupertino-based tech giant said that the iOS 18 update is set to be released worldwide as a free software update on September 16, days before the iPhone sale starts in India, the United States (US) and other regions.
Meanwhile, It is important to note that not all Apple Intelligence features will be offered to users with the first iOS 18 update.

Apple said that the first set of generative AI features will be launched to iPhone users with the iOS 18.1 update next month. Apple Intelligence additions such as a smarter Siri and Image Playground will be unveiled in the coming months.
In addition to English, Apple Intelligence will also be extended to include Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish languages over time.
iOS 18 compatible devices
Apple claimed that all devices compatible with the iOS 18 developer and public beta updates are set to be eligible to receive the public version of the update. This includes flagship models such as the iPhone 15 Pro Max to old handsets like the iPhone XR.
Moreover, the new iPhone 16 series joins the existing models as the devices that will get the big update, which includes Apple Intelligence features. Gadinsider has compiled the lineup of iPhone models getting the iOS 18 update.

While not all of these models will get Apple Intelligence. Only iPhone models powered by Apple's A17 Pro or later SoCs are said to be able to take benefits of generative AI features. These models include the entire iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
