K-Electric consumers will be obliged to pay an additional Rs0.4013 per unit in their monthly electricity bills starting January 2025.

The expected approval for a slight increment in electricity charges came as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Tuesday greenlighted K-Electric to charge extra for fuel charges adjustment (FCA) for August 2024,

Following this adjustment upcharge, the lone electricity utility will gather Rs674 million in a month from power consumers.

Surprisingly, the revenue generated by the sole electricity provider will be supplemented with an 18% GST, meaning consumers will pay a total of Rs795 million.

The fuel adjustment charges K-Electric set to charge extra will apply to all consumer categories except Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS), lifeline consumers and prepaid metering consumers.

Prior to the approval of aforesaid charges, K-Electric sought from NEPRA approval of Rs0.51 per unit collection. However, the regulatory body, after having a public hearing on October 3 and analysing the data submitted by the petitioner, okayed Rs0.4013 per unit under the FCA mechanism, in view of the interim reference tariff set in March 2023.

The power company was allowed to charge Rs3.0362 per unit extra for December bills with an impact of Rs6.105 billion.

On account of May and June 2024 FCAs, NEPRA earlier allowed K-Electric to collect an upcharge of Rs2.5934 per unit in October and Rs3.1688 in November bills.
