The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), in response to requests from the business community, is likely to extend the deadline for filing income tax returns.
Geo News, citing The News, reported that the FBR is considering a 15-day extension following a meeting between the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Asim Munir, and the business community in Karachi.
As it stands, the last date for filing income tax returns for the 2022-23 tax year is September 30, and last week the FBR ruled out any possibility of an extension.
FBR spokesperson Bakhtiar Muhammad told Geo News: "Historically, an extension was typically granted to the public. However, this time it has been decided that the deadline for submitting tax returns will not be extended, and 30th September will remain the final date for filing returns."
He acknowledged that some taxpayers might struggle to submit their returns before the deadline but advised that such individuals could contact their respective tax commissioners to request individual extensions, as allowed under the law.
"They can request an extension for specific reasons, but the deadline for the entire country will not be extended beyond 30th September," he added.
Additionally, the President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Atif Ikram, has requested that FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langriyal extend the deadline for tax return submissions until 15th October. Ikram stated that he has been in continuous communication with the FBR regarding this suggestion and noted that extending the deadline would allow more individuals to file their returns and alleviate difficulties faced by taxpayers.
