At the Made by Google event today, besides revealing the new lineup for Pixel 9 smartphones, it announced yet another app that would create abuzz in the tech market with the newly launched Pixel Studio app.

It is an app that creates artificial intelligence (AI) images with text prompts, although via an on-device model but is full of editing tools and even art style suggestions.

How does Pixel Studio works?

Pixel Studio transforms text-based prompts into images using an on-device model, eliminating the need for a monthly subscription. The app offers you multiple options:

  • Editing tools to reposition or erase objects within the frame
  • Art style suggestions, such as cinematic and anime, depending on the prompt
  • Offline processing, exclusive to Pixel 9 series devices (for now)

What to expect from Pixel Studio?

While this in-app image creator by Pixel Studio is impressive, it is incapable of matching dedicated AI processing hardware. The app utilises a small version of Imagen 3, so it would be able to get good results for most styles except the photorealistic ones.

Gemini overlay allows the user to have better results at their disposal if needed. But it uses an internet connection.

Pixel Studio complements Google's already existing Gemini overlay, which can create images on its own while having an internet connection. It also showcased updates to the Gemini overlay, enabling users to drag and drop AI-generated images directly into an email or chat.

Pixel Studio hit the market just weeks after Apple released its AI image generator for iPhones, Image Playground. Both apps use device models offline to create images. This marks the potential for a highly competitive scene in AI image generation.
