Microsoft has announced the introduction of an AI-powered text editing feature called “Rewrite” to Notepad, one of Windows’ oldest and simplest tools.

Currently rolling out in preview to Windows Insiders, the Rewrite tool will allow users to use AI to rephrase sentences, adjust tone, and modify the content’s length, as per Windows Insider Blog.

To access Rewrite, Windows Insiders can highlight the desired text, right-click, and select the feature. A dialogue box will appear, allowing users to specify their desired changes, such as lengthening or shortening the text. The Rewrite will generate three revised versions for users.

Notably, using Rewrite requires signing in to a Microsoft account, as it is powered by a cloud-based service that requires authentication and authorisation.

The Rewrite feature is currently being released on Windows 11 in select regions of the US, France, UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany.

Furthermore, Microsoft is introducing AI-powered image editing tools in Paint, previewed last month. The Generative Fill feature allows users to make changes to images based on prompts, while Generative Erase removes parts of images and blends the empty space.

The Generative Fill feature will initially be available to testers with Copilot Plus PCs, whereas Generative Erase will be accessible to all Windows 11 Insiders.
