Most Apple Silicon MacBooks only support one external display, but the M3 MacBook Air, released earlier this year, is the first device to enable multi-display support.
The multi-display support feature, which allows users to connect two external displays simultaneously, will now be available on Apple’s M3 MacBook Pro.
In November 2023, Apple promised that this feature would expand to more devices, and despite sharing the same chip as the M3 MacBook Air, it took Apple almost nine months to deliver this feature to the M3 MacBook Pro.

With the new software, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M3 chip will be able to support native resolution on the built-in display with a 6K resolution refreshing at 60Hz when the lid is open, and two external displays at 5K resolution at up to 60Hz when the lid is closed.
The upgrade also provides important bug fixes and security updates, as mentioned in Apple's macOS Sonoma update support document.
Higher-end MacBook Pro models with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips were already able to support multiple displays, so this change will only apply to the 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro model.
This recent upgrade is a win for MacBook users who appreciate portability and large displays for their work.
Apart from the display update, macOS Sonoma 14.6 also addresses a number of security vulnerabilities as outlined in Apple's security support document.
