The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has announced a relief of Rs1.2754 per unit in November bills for consumers who paid higher rates in September under the fuel charges adjustment (FCA). This marks the third consecutive month of rate reductions following 18 months of consistent increases.

In previous adjustments, consumers received refunds of Rs0.3692 per unit for July's FCA and Rs0.8555 per unit in August bills. Highlighting sector inefficiencies, Nepra’s Tariff Member pointed out that inefficiencies in the power sector have resulted in billions of rupees in losses.

Nepra reached the decision during a public hearing on 30 October and issued formal notification on Wednesday. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) initially requested a reduction of Rs0.7057 per unit, but the regulator approved an additional refund, bringing relief to Rs1.2754 per unit.

Earlier this week, the power regulator notified that K-Electric consumers will likley be burdened to pay an additional Rs0.4013 per unit in their monthly electricity bills starting January 2025.

The expected approval for a slight increment in electricity charges came as the Nepra on Tuesday greenlighted K-Electric to charge extra for fuel charges adjustment (FCA) for August 2024,

Following this adjustment upcharge, the lone electricity utility will gather Rs674 million in a month from power consumers.
