Netflix is making a major shift in its gaming division by investing in generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology to speed up game development and introduce new gaming experiences. This change comes alongside recent layoffs and the closure of some game studios, including a high-profile Los Angeles studio led by Overwatch former Executive Producer Chacko Sonny.

This move has sparked reactions among the affected employees, who faced unexpected job losses. Netflix’s Vice President of Generative AI for Games Mike Verdu explained the company’s new direction on LinkedIn. He emphasised a "creator-first" approach where AI supports human creativity and speeds up game production.

Verdu believes that AI can significantly help both large and small game development teams by providing them with advanced tools and faster development options.

AI-driven game development

Generative AI can be used in gaming for creating concept art, generating in-game dialogue, and even enhancing voice performances, potentially opening up creative possibilities.

However, some limitations remain, as generative AI art often shows signs of its artificial origins like distorted hands or facial features, which may impact player experience.

Whether these challenges would also affect AI-generated game content at Netflix is still uncertain. For Netflix, the potential of generative AI in gaming could mean faster game production and unique new features that might attract players.

Although the exact plans for Netflix’s AI-driven games remain unclear, this shift represents a major change for its gaming team and could set a new direction for the company's gaming ambitions.
