OpenAI has been at the forefront of advancements in AI (artificial intelligence) technology. The popular launch of GPT-3, its free accessibility, and the many additional features it offered have made the company an industry giant.

With features trickling down from the newest release, GPT-4o, it seems that company CEO Sam Altman already has his eyes set on the next iteration.

What's there to know about GPT-5

Speaking at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Altman spoke briefly but candidly about GPT-5. "I expect it to be a significant leap forward. A lot of the things that GPT-4 gets wrong, you know, it can't do much in the way of reasoning, and sometimes it just totally goes off the rails and makes a dumb mistake that even a six-year-old would never make," he added.

Though GPT-4 has been received warmly, Altman doesn’t seem too excited about it. At a Stanford University lecture this May, he said: "GPT-4 is the dumbest model any of you will ever have to use," even going so far as to call the flagship LLM "mildly embarrassing at best."

"It's important to ship early and often, and we believe in iterative deployment. If we go build AGI in a basement and then the world is kind of blissfully walking blindfolded along, I don't think that makes us very good neighbours," he said at the time.

This was followed by the very special GPT-4o reveal, which showcased the model solving written equations and engaging in emotional and conversational responses.

Under the backdrop of Altman's subdued reception, the GPT-4o came in as a pleasant surprise.
