Following the occupation of a significant portion of AI buzz on the internet, OpenAI has started releasing a new, female voice mode of ChatGPT.

While it's good news that a female voice assistant is coming to aid the users of OpenAI's trends-setter AI bot, the her-like voice mode is only rolled out to ChatGPT Plus subscribers.

The new audio-centric feature was showcased at the launch event of OpenAI's GPT-4o in May and later was subjected to criticism for sounding like Scarlett Johansson which caused a delay in its rollout due to safety concerns.

As reported by The Verge, the new female voice mode seems to possess more capabilities than the current voice mode.

During the demonstration of its functionality, OpenAI employees interrupted the chatbot and asked the chatbot to narrate a story in multiple ways, and much to the delight of AI enthusiasts, ChatGPT's female virtual assistant nicely managed its tone to respond as per the requests.

Reflecting on the factors that led to the delay in the female voice mode's limited debut, OpenAI said the new feature was slated to become available by late June, but the company postponed it by one month to “reach our bar to launch.”

In the time taken to delay the release, OpenAI said it was “improving the model’s ability to detect and refuse certain content.”

What are Red Teamers?

OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson said the brand-new voice mode was tested with over 100 external red teamers (people who nitpick the technologies' weaknesses and exploit them).

OpenAI has also “added new filters that will recognise and block certain requests to generate music or other copyrighted audio,” he added.
