Pakistan Railways has announced a 50% discount on train tickets for persons with disabilities (PWDs) travelling on all express and passenger trains, excluding the Green Line.
The discount is available upon presentation of a Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) bearing the disability logo, an official from the Ministry of Railways confirmed, as reported by APP. The offer also extends to attendants accompanying visually impaired passengers.
How to avail the discount
Passengers can avail themselves of the discount by presenting their CNIC with the disability logo. Attendants accompanying visually impaired passengers are also eligible for the discounted fare.
Accessibility improvements for PWDs
To enhance accessibility and improve convenience for PWDs, Pakistan Railways has introduced several provisions at major stations. Wheelchairs are now available at all key stations, and special booking counters have been established at reservation offices to cater to PWDs.
Executive washrooms and restrooms have been made accessible at select stations, with plans to extend this facility to 12 additional stations in the near future. These measures aim to make train travel more inclusive and user-friendly.
It should be noted that Pakistan Railways currently operates 98 trains daily with 1,180 functional coaches. However, 72% of the department’s coaches have exceeded their expected lifespan, necessitating additional maintenance and resources.
