In a remarkable development in the realm of information technology (IT), Pakistan has been ranked in the the Top Tier-1 (Role-Modelling) of the ITU-Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI-V5) 2024, said State minister for IT and telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja.

While the news reflects on the developmental strides propelling the country to secure prestigious recognition, Khawaja's remarks came at an event titled "Digital Pakistan Cybersecurity Hackathon 2024", which was kicked off earlier this week on Wednesday.

The IT minister attributed the milestone to the efforts made by stakeholders across the government, industry, academia, and law enforcement agencies, adding that the government was willing to make Pakistan an IT hub.

Digital Pakistan Cybersecurity Hackathon 2024 launched

Digital Pakistan Cybersecurity Hackathon 2024 was organised and launched by Ignite —a non-profit company owned by the government of Pakistan and administered by the IT ministry— igniting an assortment of a series of cybersecurity bouts among 521 teams.

The teams will be participating from across Pakistan, showcasing their agility to compete in cybersecurity challenges made to recognise, amplify, and promote local talent in this domain.

“This year, we conducted cybersecurity awareness sessions and practical training workshops in 16 cities, resulting in over 3,000 individuals completing hands-on cybersecurity training. The launch event in Karachi represents our vision to create a future-ready cybersecurity workforce that will defend Pakistan’s digital borders,” said Ignite CEO Adeel Aijaz Shaikh.

Khawaja also expressed gratitude to partner organisations, organisers, and all the participants who helped bring Digital Pakistan Cybersecurity Hackathon 2024 to the table successfully, adding that such events pave the foundations of an ecosystem of innovation and collective efforts in cybersecurity.
