An increment of 11.7% has been noted in the total public debt stock of the federal government of Pakistan on a year-on-year (YoY) basis in September 2024 compared to the corresponding period in 2023.
According to the monthly data issued by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the debt stock was recorded at Rs69.570 trillion in September 2024, up from Rs62.281tn in September 2023.
On the contrary, the total public debt stock of the federal government dropped 1.1% to Rs69.588tn on a month-on-month basis from Rs70.362tn recorded in August 2024.

The SBP data indicates a 19.7% surge in the domestic debt of the central government in September 2024, rising to Rs47.536tn as it stood at Rs39.698tn in September 2023. However, the federal government's domestic debt slipped 1.7% over the previous month.
Of the total domestic debt, the long-term public debt rose from Rs30.694tn to Rs36.229tn, whereas the short-term debt stock jacked from Rs8.883tn to Rs11.222tn during the last year.
