The Senate Standing Committee on IT has urged the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to reduce mobile phone taxes to make them more affordable for the public.
Since it's not PTA's prerogative to impose or drop taxes, as the responsibility lies with the Federal Board of Revenue, the committee emphasised the need for relief in this sector.
In a meeting held on Wednesday, the Secretary of IT and Telecom shared updates on Pakistan’s digital progress.
He highlighted that the country’s liberalisation policy and the anticipated arrival of 5G would significantly enhance internet services.
Pakistan also reported a 37% growth in IT exports, reaching $3.3 billion in 2024’s first 11 months, compared to $2.4bn during the same period last year.
Despite this, the official noted that the overall compound growth rate for the past five years stood at 23%, indicating room for improvement.
Infrastructure development was another focus of the meeting. The secretary announced the addition of four new submarine cables to improve internet connectivity, with three expected to be operational within the next year.
However, senators raised concerns about persistent connectivity issues in remote areas like Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Daily internet disruptions and challenges in obtaining permits for mobile towers were flagged as ongoing problems.
