RCS on iOS 18 applaudable, but renaming group chats comes with a catch

The newly rolled out iOS 18 has finally integrated Rich Communication Services (RCS) into the iPhone and filled in the gap.

While the adoption of an interactive messaging interface and experience has so far been more than welcome, considering it remained confined to Android smartphones for several years and leaving iPhone users in longing, there's a notable catch involving group chats.

Citing a Redditor named Dane_Gleessak, Android Authority reported that if an Android participant of an RCS group chat renames the group, the name will then also be changed for iOS users.

The development represents a way more emboldened amendment compared to Google Messages on Android, which lets users change group names, but for the doer's eyes only.

The point to be noted is that iOS users have long enjoyed the ability to rename a group text in iMessage as long as everyone in the group is using iOS devices. However, the RCS in the new iOS 18 update has extended this functionality to Android users as well.

On the contrary, instant messaging apps like WhatsApp have plentiful options to let users change the names of group chats, where either the group admin (the moderator of the group chat) or everyone in the group can rename the group chat, depending on the privacy settings set for that particular group chat.
