Currently, Samsung is set to acquire Oxford Semantic Technologies, a UK-based knowledge graph startup that has created an AI reasoning engine that can be applied on edge devices, for an unfolded amount.

“By integrating and connecting data, Oxford Semantic Technologies enhances the understanding of how people use a product or service and enables rapid information retrieval and recommendation. As such, it is considered one of the key technologies for realizing more sophisticated and personalized AI solutions,” Samsung said.

The company says its knowledge graph and semantic reasoning engine, RDFox, can process an organisation’s data into machine-readable knowledge that it can then utilise to offer better user experiences like enhanced search results and recommendations using rules-based AI.

Oxford Semantic Technologies CEO Peter Crocker added that this technology “will offer Samsung’s customers even more sophisticated personalisation.” Neither company dished out specific examples of this personalisation.

Knowledge graphs utilise a graph structure to arrange and represent data on real-world entities like people, objects, events, scenarios and concepts, along with indicating their relationships.

Oxford Semantic Technologies says its software helps companies enhance data processing and support advanced reasoning in the cloud and on edge devices.

The startup said its applications range from aiding in medical diagnoses to integrating maps for autonomous vehicle safety, detecting financial crimes, and suggesting product configurations.

The acquisition provides Samsung access to the startup’s AI and personal knowledge graph engines that, it said in a statement, will let it bring together scattered information and context from different services and applications to give a personalised user experience while keeping data secured on-device.

Samsung added that Oxford Semantic Technology applies not just to mobile devices but all its products, like televisions and home appliances.
