Since its launch in 2020, the PlayStation 5 has been on an unstoppable trajectory towards success. Continuing its meteoric rise, Sony proudly revealed a remarkable sales milestone for its flagship console.
The tech giant unveiled that PlayStation 5 sales have now surpassed a staggering 50 million units target since its debut. Notably, these figures represent actual units sold to customers, firmly in the hands of eager gamers, not just stock sitting on store shelves or in warehouses.
This milestone comes after Sony's previous announcement in July, stating that 40 million units had been sold. Astonishingly, the company managed to move an additional 10 million units from July 2023 to December 2023, indicating a sustained and significant demand for the console.
Sony had grappled with supply chain challenges that hindered widespread availability, fostering an unjust scalping market where consoles were sold at exorbitant prices. However, the situation has notably improved, making it easier for enthusiasts to purchase the PS5 at its intended retail price, even through online platforms like Amazon.
Now, with enhanced availability and the introduction of a new slimmer PlayStation 5, Sony aims to drive sales further into the new year, capitalising on the console's continued popularity.
