Music streaming giant Spotify has announced to discontinue its Car Thing, its already suspended car display, for the shrank user base that is luckily enjoying this facility.

The latest suspension set to be implemented on the remaining car units will be observed later this year, according to an official announcement by the company.

What is Car Thing on Spotify

Spotify introduced its Car Thing back in 2021 and put it on sale by early 2022, shortly after dislodging its "Car View" from its mobile app. In its follow up, the company revived a driving-friendly user interface, however, decided to do away with it in July 2022, only a few months after launching the $90 in-car gadget.

In the eyes of industry insiders and analysts, Car Thing could have been a fruitful initiative by Spotify only if rivals like Android Auto and CarPlay stopped existing instead of alluring a vast user base.

Spotify says the decision has been made in the face of “product demand and supply chain issues.” Later on, the music company assured that “existing devices will perform as intended.” Unfortunately, it appears that the company is no longer interested in walking the talk, considering the newly announced discontinuation.

Informing its customers through an email, Spotify says, "We’re switching gears. As of December 9th, 2024, Car Thing will be discontinued, and will stop operating."

This indicates that the vehicle still having the privilege to support the device will too be deprived of the facility.

Emphasising on December 9, 2024 to be the discontinuation date, Spotify advised users on an official support page to reset and dispose of the gadget once the Spotify Car Thing jailbreak comes into effect.

Spotify Car Thing hack

While there's no official or concrete workaround to keep using Car Thing as the company has decided to pull the plug on it, some users have come up with a meticulously crafted hack to Install Android on Car Thing after it will be dead.
